‘How Did We Get Here?’ is a homage to all the sci-fi movies, stories and music I have grown up with. As a composer, Sci-fi music got me interested in making weird experimental music in the first place, so it feels natural for me to pay homage to it and play with so many tropes!

I am passionate about immersive fiction, exploring how sound can build a world around the listener. Listening is an immersive act, hearing is an interior thing, so… without giving too much away within the story… this is part of the way in which the narrative of the audiobook is written, from the beginning the listener is aware that they are in some way part of the story, and that they are being told something because it is important to them, they are immersed in it.

I love sci-fi as a genre as it can be so accessibly political. The story is set in the far future but it very much relates to our current predicaments. The story takes place on a colony planet 4 centuries in the future, on the last remaining settlement of the human race. Actually, the last day of the last remaining settlement… the day the human race realises that their final colony planet is collapsing…

From that point on within the story there are lots of Sci-fi tropes, all of these tropes are handled in a self-aware way which will hopefully twist them, sometimes in a comedic or just plain bizarre way. Each chapter has it’s own musical sci-fi aesthetic: 1980s Vangelis, 1960s Bernard Herrmann, 1960s Radiophonic Workshop, and 2020s Post-Hans Zimmer… see if you can spot which is which!
